Text to speech / Speak selected text when the key is pressed; Slow Keys; Mouse Keys. The keyboard viewer just confirms my list of keys that are not working. Starting in safe mode makes no difference; nor does booting from the Mac OS X Install Disc and running Terminal from the Utilities menu. The same keys as before fail to work.

Hi all, Am I missing something obvious? I have OS X 10.10.3, MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) and 1.0.4 Spotify. Media keys are not working.
Whichever problem you are having with your media keys, adding in the FN key to your shortcut will solve it. For example, if F12 for Save As is not working in Word, Excel or PowerPoint, that probably means that your media keys are dominant. You can just hit FN + F12 and your save as keyboard shortcut will work. Function lock your media key.
My media keys won't open spotify. I reloaded my iMac last week with Mojave and now my keyboard pause play Rew FF buttons don't work with Spotify. Every time it opens stupid iTunes which I don't use anymore. I've tried that Mac media key forwarder and have it set to Spotify.

Use standard function keys

Standard function keys work differently depending on the app and the keyboard shortcuts that you've set up. Some apps have their own keyboard shortcut preferences that you can customize.

To use the standard function keys, hold the Fn (Function) key when pressing a function key. For example, pressing both Fn and F12 (speaker icon) performs the action assigned to the F12 key instead of raising the volume of your speakers.

If your keyboard doesn’t have an Fn key, try pressing and holding the Control key when pressing a function key.

Change the default function key behavior

If you want to change the top row of keys to work as standard function keys without holding the Fn key, follow these steps:

If you don't see 'Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys'

If you don't see 'Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys', you might be using a keyboard not made by Apple. These keyboards might need a utility to change the keyboard functions. Check with your keyboard manufacturer for more information.

Some keys don't work as expected

From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Speech.
Click the Text to Speech tab.
If 'Speak selected text when the key is pressed' is enabled, the key or key combination set to speak text cannot be used for other purposes or used to type text--click Set Key and change it to a less-commonly used key combination (try to use modifier keys such as Shift, Command, Option, and Control). Or, disable the 'Speak selected text when the key is pressed' option.
Click the Universal Access pane in System Preferences, click the Keyboard tab.
Make sure that Slow Keys is turned off. With Slow Keys on, you need to press a key for a longer period of time for it to be recognized.
In the Universal Access pane, click the Mouse tab, and make sure Mouse Keys is turned off. With Mouse Keys enabled, you cannot use the Numeric Keypad to enter numbers--instead the keypad moves the pointer (cursor). (There is an option to enable Mouse Keys with five presses of the Option key; you may want to turn that option off to avoid accidentally enabling it.) If Mouse Keys is enabled and you are using a keyboard with no numeric keypad or Num Lock function, see Unable to type while Mouse Keys is enabled in Mac OS X.

If the issue persists, use Keyboard Viewer to help isolate the issue:
1. Click the Language & Text pane (Mac OS X v10.6) or International pane (Mac OS X v10.5.8 or earlier) in System Preferences.
2. Click the Input Sources tab (or Input Menu tab in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
3. Click the Keyboard & Character Viewer 'On' checkbox to select it (click the Keyboard Viewer 'On' checkbox in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
4. From the Input (flag) menu, choose Show Keyboard Viewer.
5. If the keyboard is connected and detected by Mac OS X, the keys you type will highlight in the Keyboard Viewer window. Open TextEdit (or any text application), and try to type something using the keys that were previously not responding to see if they highlight in Keyboard Viewer.
Start from the Mac OS X Install Disc, choose Terminal from the Utilities menu and test the keys which were previously not working. If the keys work while started from the Install disc, then the keyboard itself is working correctly.
